Starting the Year provides children with a variety of opportunities to participate in hands-on science activities. The teacher works to develop a community of learners while introducing the four-step science cycle and the use of graphic representation. During language and literacy activities, children will become familiar with new vocabulary related to school and will gain information from related fiction and nonfiction books. Math activities will focus on using counting and comparison to answer questions and creating and analyzing charts, graphs, and models. Starting the Year contains 5 complete science lesson plans, daily suggestions for language and literacy lessons, daily math lessons, and suggestions for materials and activities to be included in all areas of center-based play.
